Will The Fashion Industry Every Be The Same? Honoring the Death and Legacy of Karl Lagerfeld
Posted on February 25 2019
Fashion lovers around the world all share a similar story. When we talk about how we fell in love with fashion - it's when we played dress up in our mom’s dresses and heels that we felt the power fashion had- it made us smile; dress up became more than just a game it somehow slithered into our daily lives and we are forever grateful to our mom, aunts, and older sisters closets. Or, we might have fallen in love with fashion the moment we flipped through the pages of Vogue and the monochromatic editorial gave us the ability to see beyond the ordinary fashion sphere. Or maybe, just maybe it was the first time we wore something that scared us, something so out of the norm that it gave us a sudden burst of exhilaration and allowed us to understand how powerful fashion could be. These are the moments we allowed fashion to do more than adorn our bodies. Through choosing and wearing the right clothes in ways that excite us, we learned that we could turn any fantasy into reality.
Luckily, we have fashion eccentrics who share our excitement and understand the power fashion has in interpreting reality. Among them are legendary designers such as Karl Lagerfeld. Lagerfeld dominated the fashion world by willing his fantasy of Parisian flavored eccentricity into existence. He believed that fashion is a language that only the imaginative can understand, and that there is no beauty without strangeness. As the fashion world mourns the death of Karl Lagerfeld, we recognize that his love for creativity translates into many of the special moments that we share everyday with fashion. Lagerfeld’s is celebrated for his innovation and unwavering brilliance that completely transformed what we know as fashion today. Designing for three different houses – Fendi, Karl Lagerfeld and of course Chanel, which he is famously known for, his vision broadened fashion’s reach. Lagerfeld ventured into fashion territory which sought to inject beauty into the life men and women from all walks of life. Revolutionizing haute couture and ready-to-wear fashion, his work fostered inclusivity and allowed people to express themselves through his garments. Through his many collaborations, he sought to become somewhat a designer of the people, letting go of fashion’s narrative of only serving the wealthy elite into one which transcended borders, races and genders.
Whatever you might think of Lagerfeld, there’s no question that he has always excelled at nourishing the fashion world's imagination and souls. He succeeded because he willed the most beautiful things into the world, and he made us believe that we are all capable of making impossible things happen.
So the question stands- Will the Fashion Industry ever be the same?
